Objective Two

Participate in a PR program (bookmobile)

On Saturday, July 14th, I worked the bookmobile at our local Farmer's Market. The bookmobile was already parked and the table and books set out when I arrived. After grabbing a coffee from the Loose Caboose and a gluten-free pastry from one of the stands, I settled in underneath our tent to await the crowds. Almost immediately, we had a woman arrive who needed some ideas about how to get her grandaughter to read. We discussed her likes and dislikes, various kinds of e-readers and audio book options, and programs such as the "Read Dog" that the library offers to help reluctant readers. After she left with a few pamphlets and a lot of advice, several other members of the community came through to browse the free book shelf, and a couple checked out some books off of the other carts. We opened a library account for one family, and another family requested that we do story time with whatever children were available. I picked out a couple of picture books and found a spot on the communal lawn where the children could see me. We got a group of about six or seven children together and I had fun reading "You Bad Dog" and "My Cat, the Silliest Cat in the World" aloud. We even had a dog come listen for a little while.
After storytime, we answered a few more questions, gave away a few more books, and packed up. The folks who come to the market really appreciate the instant availability to the library, even though the actual library is only a few blocks away.
